Falmouth Goes Whaling Paintings of Franklin Lewis Gifford
During the month of April the Woods Hole Public Library is loaning some of its paintings by Franklin
Lewis Gifford to Highfield Hall for an exhibit in conjunction with the Falmouth Historical Society,
and facilitated by the Woods Hole Historical Collection & Museum.
This show is an unprecedented co-operation between the two historic museums, a sign of the recent
growth in mutuality. Several of Falmouth's paintings will also be in the show.

Making Mittens from Recycled Wool Sweaters
Margaret McCormick and Kellie Porter, both librarians at the Woods Hole Library, have teamed up to give a craft workshop on how to transform old wool sweaters into felt mittens. For extra warmth the mittens will be lined with polar fleece, the material used in fleece jackets. Participants can design their own one-of-a-kind mittens by mixing and matching colors. Bring your sewing machine, if possible, and scissors, thread, pins and other sewing necessities. The fabric will be provided. The workshop is free, with a small charge for the fabric. Old Lamp Repair, with Julie and Francis Doohan
Bring your broken lamp to the Woods Hole Library where Julie and Francis Doohan will teach you how to diagnose the problem and then fix it. The Doohans will have the tools and materials needed for the workshop. Participants are asked to bring small change to pay for any replacement parts they may need in repairing their lamp; there is no other charge. How to make an herb (or plant) basket Barbara Douglass will hold a two-evening workshop on how to make an herb (or plant) basket of reeds that can be hung on a wall or placed on a table. How to Tie a Monkey's Fist &
other Knots, and Their History Stephen Wagner, Captain of NOAA's Delaware II, will give a workshop on how to construct a monkey's fist and other knots, as he discusses the history of knot tying. The monkey's fist is a heavy knot that sailors attach to a light line in order to give the line thrust as they heave it to shore or to another vessel. Sailors historically have whiled away their free time constructing working knots and knots as works of art. To pre-register and for more information, please call the museum. Free parking. History of Coast Guard Weather Ships
Capt. Robertson P. Dinsmore will give a slide presentation on the history of weather ships, in the first of the Woods Hole Historical Museum's annual winter 'Conversations'. From 1940 (during World War II) to 1980, the Coast Guard manned Weather ships to collect and transmit vital weather data and to provide navigational and rescue services to transoceanic aircraft.
